In the triple option, the qb makes his first decision to give the fullback the ball (if the defensive tackle crashes down, qb keeps the ball, if the dt is blocked, qb gives the fb the ball). Its a run up the middle by the fb, who becomes a blocker upon not getting the ball.
If the qb keeps the ball, he runs down the line of scrimmage. If the defensive end crashes down or beats the block, he pitches the ball to the trailing running back. If the de is blocked, or the qb can get by him, he then wants to turn upfield. The outside linebacker then dictates what the qb does with the ball. Attack the qb, pitch it to the rb. Stay back (or get fooled by a fake pitch), qb keeps it up field.
The triple option by design is all about outnumbering the opponents on the perimeter. The defense knows this, wanting to get lb'ers outside to help. Thats why you keep pounding the fullback up the middle, keeping the lb inside, keeping the dt and de slanting inside. That will open up the outside, allowing the qb and/or the rb to "turn the corner". Thats when big plays are made. Quarterback passing isn't one of the options. Its fullback (or keep it), pitch to running back, or keep it. Hope this helps..

Triple option puts a lot of pressure on the safety. He must come up because if not defense is out numbered. this is why you will see QBs running down the line then backing up and passing. THey are trying to draw the safety in and either throw one on one to the WR or hopefully you will have the tight end running wide open down the middle. Teams that run similar offense would be Neb(in their hay day), Air Force.

thanks/i misunderstood the triple option.

what are your views on the option game? obv if you can do it well then you are gonna put the defense under pressure and i note that Air Force did well last year running the option. But surely if the opposition knows that in the case of AF then all they will do is snap the ball to the QB and run it,then they will be shut down eventually?
is the fact that so few teams run the option a fact that it is not that good? i would imagine if you bet an option team and they are down big you are in trouble as they cant strike back quickly thru the air.?
predictable offense? surely a balanced offense would be better in the long run

thanks again lads

If you don't have the horses(throwing qb, fast WR and a big line), it is not a bad offense. One, very few teams run it so most defenses have not practiced against it. It is very hard to practice against it, if your team doesn't run it because teams that run it execute it so much faster and smoother then any scout team can run it. JUSTMYOPINION

My opinion is that it is one of the better offenses to run.. Its not going to work in the nfl, no one will put the qb at risk, and the disruptive dt's and de's that can hurt the triple option are all in the pro's...
Major d-1 schools have gotten away from it simply because of boosters, alumns, tv, etc. They all want the high powered offenses throwing the ball all the time. The "pretty" offenses...
The triple option in the hands of a strong runner making good quick decisions at qb is hard to stop. Major d-1 teams want passing qb's (who can scramble, thats a plus).
Watch some footage of Nebraska vs. Florida..
